Daily Photo: Booth School of Business Columns at the University of Chicago

Well here's a change from the usual University of Chicago photos. This is from the Booth School of Business. If you go to Rockefeller Chapel, hop across the street to the super modern Booth School of Business for some much different architecture.

The Most Common Beginner Mistake on Google+

Day 3 of my Google+ experiment.

I can only imagine that this is the most common mistake people make, because I know I did it and I know that my friends did it too. When you "share" a post or a photo, you can choose which circles you want to share with. You can also choose to share it with the public. If you want only your friends to see it, share it with your friends circle. But if you want anyone to see it and connect with new people, you want to share it with the public. As far as I can tell, there is no difference between sharing it with the public and sharing it with the public and your friends circle. Once you make it public, everyone, including your circles, sees it.

So when you share your images on Google+, simply share with the public and you will be good to go. Then again, if you are describing that painful bunion, maybe you should keep that to your friends circle.

I hope to see even more of you on Google+. Use this weekend as your chance to get started.

I am curious - Yellow
on line business
Yellow lines aplenty in the southwestern part of Hillfield Park Mews. Though not the supposedly "fake" "wobbly" yellow line reported by Stephen Moore in the Muswell Hill Journal. (That has since been overpainted with a "proper" line by Haringey Council''s contractors.)

I was curious about this news story about a parking fine sent to Mr Gilbert Dyet, a local resident. Mr Dyet, a professional driver who ran a successful car hire business, described the line. "It was not the same height and it was very rough and wobbly. There were no signs. He was sure the line had been painted illegally."

So apparently was the Haringey's press office. A 'spokesman for Haringey Council' told the Muswell Hill Journal: : "We are working with Mr Dyet to resolve the situation to see if there are still illegal lines in the area".

The Journal printed the story on 22 November 2007 headlining it - with nice alliteration - "Fines fury over fake yellow line". There was no correction by Haringey Council.

Which was odd; because I was later told by Haringey Staff that both Mr Dyet and Mr Moore were given inaccurate information. That the wobbly yellow line was indeed legal.

►Update 17 April 2009

I was asked about the eventual outcome of this mini-investigation. My apologies for the very long delay in adding a follow-up. After this posting I was very confused to get two further versions of the "facts" from Haringey and was awaiting some clarity. Looking back over the emails, I realise that it never came.

Elevated rail lines on Wabash Ave.

Realizing that I have several friends who have never been in Chicago, this is one of its trademarks, elevated rail lines, some of which forms a "loop" in the business part of the downtown. This is from Wabash Avenue. To see the loop, search "Chicago Transit Authority" and go to downtown maps.
