The NYC Department of Transportation's Urban Art Program partnered with artist Will Ryman and the Flatiron/23rd Street Partnership Business Improvement District to install the sculpture, Bird at Flatiron Plaza in Manhattan. The 12-foot tall and 16-foot wide sculpture is fabricated from fifty-five hundred found and manufactured nails. The work weighs five tons and is loosely inspired by Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven". Ryman has always been drawn to oversized figures that alter interior spaces and landscapes. He recently exhibited larger-than-life roses on the Park Avenue Malls during the winter of 2010 in partnership with the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation.
A native New Yorker, Ryman has exhibited domestically and internationally. Writer-turned-artist, Ryman is heavily influenced by the works of absurdist playwrights and philosophers. He is represented by Paul Kasmin Gallery.
