What happened to former Woolworths shops in Bristol?

2010 - More than 300 of the former Woolworths stores are still empty a year and a half after the national chain collapsed. That figure represents some 40% of the shops run by the one-time retailer. Nationally firms such as Poundland and supermarkets Iceland and Waitrose have taken over some shops.

But in Bristol, two of the former stores have taken very different approaches to running
businesses on the sites. On Clifton's Blackboy Hill, Woolworths has been transformed into an indoor market while the shop in The Mall is now called Family Bargains. John Skinner, the owner of the building which houses the Clifton indoor market, said it was "never good to see empty buildings or shops".
"It's all very depressing to see them empty and boarded up," he added.

Unique goods
Woolworths went into administration in 2008 as the firm struggled to compete with online retailers and cut-price supermarket deals. Mr Skinner said the traders at the Bristol market have not attempted to do the same thing as Woolies and hoped the offer of unique products meant they would flourish.
"In conjunction with the traders that work at the market it's turned into an eclectic mix - a bit like a mini borough market in London.
"We weren't really trying to replicate the Woolworths store or what Woolworths did but I suppose in a way we were trying to replicate the fact that Woolworths had a huge range of products.
"Similarly, the market has a huge mix of products, services and goods."
But Mr Skinner says there are at least some comparisons shoppers could draw between Woolworths and the market. With products as diverse as designer jewellery to fresh fish he believes the market has "got just about anything you could think of".

In the city centre Galleries shopping centre, Fisal Lalani is one of the people behind a new store in the former Woolworths premises. Family Bargains has focussed on discount products. Mr Lalani said his firm was one of the unlikely winners from the recession.
"It's given more opportunity for us to offer cheaper products.

"Our stores sell lots of clearance stock and given the state of the economy a lot of people are clearing their stock at the moment."
Mr Skinner backed the approach of the city centre store as shoppers look to make their pay cheques stretch even further.
"I suppose there are a lot of people looking for greater value for what they are spending
"There's always people who are willing to pay extra for quality," he added.
